Tuning in to the Inner Voice

Question : When I go through life, I come across many dilemmas. I’m not sure at times, if what I’m doing is right or wrong. I try my best to listen to my ‘Inner Voice’, but it is exactly at these moments I feel I just can’t hear my Inner Voice. So what do I do then? Is there any way I can tune in to my Inner Voice better?

Answer : Yes there is an easier way to tune in to know what your ‘inner-voice’ is saying. We often say that when you have a dilemma, it is good to listen to your mind, but consult your heart as well, for just a moment! Take a decision which is a marriage between the ‘head’ and ‘heart’…

And in case, you feel you are not able to listen to the voice of your heart / Inner-Voice, just ask yourself the following questions. You will know what your heart has to say in most cases.

1. Can I go home and proudly/happily tell my family/children about what I am about to do?
2. If there were a hundred eyes watching me at this moment, would I still do what I’m intending to do?
3. If I am at the receiving end of my action, would I like/appreciate it?
4. If my son/daughter were to ask me for help in this dilemma, would I recommend the same action as I am about to perform now?
5. Do I really want to do this? ( and listen to the first thought that comes in your head – that’s your Inner-Voice speaking )

Suggestion : In the long run, practicing a few moments of sitting silently and listening to all the chatter in your head is good for you. you can do this at work, on your bed, in the shower, anywhere! You will slowly start to distinguish the voices in your head. The voice that speaks with love, faith and hope is the Inner-Voice. The Inner-Voice does not give explanations and reasons. It just says what must be done. Try to identify your inner voice. This is meditative and a practice in mindfulness in its own way.

Read my post on Meditation to start connecting with your Inner Voice as a regular practice.

And in case you still don’t know what you are hoping for at the end of the coin-toss, choose whatever comes through the coin. If you feel light & good about choosing it, you’ve got your answer. If you feel bad & heavy about choosing it, you’ve got your answer again!

NOTE : The questions and answers in this series are compilations of discussions during therapeutic sessions with my clients. These are not generic pieces of advice.  I am deeply aware that these answers can seem way too simplistic for people actually going through similar situations. Please comment or connect with me if you find yourself grappling with something I have expressed.
